The Markowitsch M1 2023 is a full-bodied red wine blend designed for long aging, sourced from the Aubuehl vineyard in the Arbesthaler Huegelland region. Aubuehl is considered the warmest vineyard in the region and is situated at an elevation of 210 to 220 meters above sea level with a southwest-facing exposure. The calcareous-sandy, slightly loamy soils warm up quickly and provide ideal conditions for the grape varieties cultivated here on a total of 4.5 hectares. The M1 2023 is composed of 65% Merlot, 25% Blaufraenkisch, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Since 2000, the Markowitsch Winery has bottled only the ripest batches under the M1 designation.

For the 2023 vintage, the ripest grapes were harvested in early to mid-October through multiple rounds of manual selection. Following a dry and very cold winter, rainfall in April and May provided the necessary water supply. The changeable summer brought short heat waves and cooler spells before an early and swift harvest yielded healthy, fully ripe grapes. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation takes place at 30–32 °C in wooden fermentation vats with a maceration period of 24 to 30 days. The Markowitsch M1 2023 is then aged for 24 months in French barriques and a 1,200-liter wooden cask. With 14.5% alcohol in the 0.75-liter bottle, this age-worthy Austrian red wine has excellent aging potential through 2047.
