Roku Gin — The Japanese Craft Gin

Roku Gin — The Japanese Craft Gin

Roku Gin is a premium Japanese craft gin that captures the essence of Japan’s nature, culture, and precise craftsmanship. Bottled at 43% ABV, it has become one of the most recognized Japanese gins worldwide, combining tradition with modern distilling expertise.

History and Heritage

Roku Gin is produced by Suntory, one of Japan’s most respected spirits companies, founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii in Osaka. Torii’s vision was to create spirits that reflect Japanese character while appealing to global tastes. Over more than a century, Suntory refined its distillation techniques, becoming world-famous for whisky before expanding into gin production.

The name “Roku” means “six” in Japanese and refers to the six unique Japanese botanicals used in the recipe. These ingredients are harvested according to the concept of shun — enjoying each element at the peak of its seasonal flavor.

Japanese Botanicals and Flavor Profile

Roku Gin is distinguished by six seasonal Japanese botanicals:

  • Sakura flower and sakura leaf (spring)

  • Sencha and gyokuro green teas (summer)

  • Sansho pepper (autumn)

  • Yuzu peel (winter)

These are blended with traditional gin botanicals such as juniper, coriander, and citrus peels. Each botanical is distilled separately to preserve its individual character before being carefully blended into a balanced final spirit.

The result is a complex yet harmonious gin. It opens with fresh citrus notes of yuzu, followed by delicate floral hints of cherry blossom and subtle green tea depth. The finish is smooth with a gentle spicy touch from sansho pepper.

Design and Cultural Identity

The hexagonal bottle symbolizes the six Japanese botanicals. Its design reflects minimalist Japanese aesthetics, and the label is made from traditional washi paper, reinforcing the connection to Japanese craftsmanship and culture.

How to Enjoy Roku Gin

Roku Gin is versatile and can be enjoyed:

  • Neat or over ice to appreciate its layered botanicals

  • In a classic Gin & Tonic with a slice of fresh ginger or citrus

  • In refined cocktails that highlight its floral and citrus character

It pairs particularly well with Japanese cuisine such as sushi, sashimi, and grilled seafood, where its subtle flavors complement delicate dishes.

Roku Gin is more than just a spirit — it is a celebration of Japan’s seasons, craftsmanship, and attention to detail in every drop.
