Wagemut by N. Kroeger PX-CASK Barbados 40,3% Vol. 0,7l

Wagemut by N. Kroeger PX-CASK is based on a 10-year-old rum from Barbados that undergoes its entire primary aging under tropical conditions in former bourbon barrels. The rum is then shipped to Germany, where Wagemut takes over the further aging process. Here, it is finished for at least three months in freshly emptied Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. A unique aspect lies in the preparation of these casks: Wagemut is able to source sherry in large containers directly from Spain and re-coat the casks with PX sherry before filling them with rum. As a result, the barrels—still moist from the sherry aging—come into contact with the matured Barbados rum. The base spirit was distilled in both pot stills and column stills.

At 40.3% ABV in the 0.7-liter bottle, the PX-Cask is one of Wagemut’s flagship releases. The producer communicates the key details with particular transparency: 10 years of aging in Barbados, at least three months of PX sherry cask finishing in Germany, ex-bourbon casks for the primary aging, and no added color. It is important to note that Wagemut itself uses the trade designation “spirits.” The finished product should therefore not be referred to as a classic rum, but rather as a spirit based on 10-year-aged Barbados rum with a PX sherry cask finish. It is precisely the combination of long-term tropical aging and subsequent finishing in freshly emptied PX casks that constitutes the key unique selling point of this bottling.
