Matthew Gloag, the grandson of the founder, took over the family business 96 years after it was founded in 1800. The following year, he created a new whisky blend, which he called "The Grouse Brand", in anticipation of the many hunters who stopped off in Perth during the hunting season. The label, designed by his daughter, depicts the Scottish national bird, the grouse.
Due to the immediate sales success, the name was extended to "The Famous Grouse" within a few years and the word "Brand" was dropped, under which the whisky is still known today.
