The most famous port wine is the Royal Oporto, which is produced by the company Real Companhia Velha. Real Companhia Velha is not only a worldwide renowned port wine house but also the oldest company in Portugal.
The grapes for the production are grown on slate and granite slopes in the valley of the famous Rio Douro (Duoro Valley). After the grapes are harvested by hand and then pressed, they mature for at least 3 years in oak barrels.
