The history of Ornellaia is characterized by vision and determination. Founded in 1981 on an excellent terroir in Bolgheri, Italy, the Ornellaia winery has been continuously committed to excellence. It takes a leading role in the development of expressive wines and is committed to sustainable practices. The winery is owned by the Frescobaldi family, and numerous employees have contributed to the company's success over the years.

The President of Ornellaia, Marquis Ferdinando Frescobaldi, and the CEO Giovanni Geddes da Filicaja, who has held this position since 1999, manage the winery with precision and dedication. Four decades after its foundation, the name Ornellaia stands for the Italian way of life worldwide and symbolizes an aspiration for a style that transcends temporal fashions - a lasting legacy.

Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore is composed of 51% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested by hand and transported in 15 kg crates, followed by double selection and gentle pressing. Vinification takes place separately for each grape variety and parcel, starting with alcoholic fermentation at 26-30°C in steel tanks, followed by maceration for 10-15 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place mainly in oak barriques (70% new, 30% first-use barrels).

After 18 months of ageing in barriques, including six months after the different wines have been blended into a cuvee, and a further 12 months of bottle ageing, the wine is released. It is bottled and sealed with a natural cork.
