The Kilchoman Distillery on Islay has launched its oldest whisky to date - Kilchoman 16 year old.

Founded in 2005 by Anthony and his wife, Kilchoman was the first new distillery to open on Islay in more than 120 years.

Their whisky range includes their signature peated single malt, Machir Bay, limited editions based on 100% Islay grown barley and the annual sherry cask matured Loch Gorm release.

Kilchoman's future bottlings will be released as part of a Batch Strength series, with each batch having a slight variation in its composition. To mark this individuality, the batch numbers will be noted on each bottle, while the design will remain the same. Consistently, each batch will be bottled with an alcohol content of 57%. As a result, Kilchoman opts for the term "Batch Strength Release" rather than the traditional term "Cask Strength Release". The composition of casks for these batches includes around 20% STR wine casks, with the possibility of using other types of red wine casks in the future, as well as 10-15% sherry casks and 65-70% ex-bourbon casks.

The latest creation, Kilchoman Batch Strength, was matured in a complex combination of re-charred red wine, oloroso and bourbon casks and, as usual for this range, was bottled at 57% alcohol. Crafted by the Kilchoman Master Distiller, Kilchoman spring water was added to the whisky after maturation to achieve the desired alcohol strength and bring out the characteristic Kilchoman flavor with notes of dark fruits, rich spices and honey.
