At Compass Box "Spice Tree" is a vatted Highland malt full of spice flavors. The whiskies for Spice Tree come only from distilleries in the northern Highlands, mainly from the village of Brora. The first maturation takes place in a mix of first-fill and refill American oak casks. The second maturation uses heavily toasted French oak barrel ends, resulting in a distinct flavor profile due to the heavy toasting. The second maturation lasts two years.

The story of this blended malt begins on a trip to the south of Spain when John Glaser, 'whiskymaker' of Compass Box, learned a lot about the local sherry wines.
Years later, when he discovered the signature Scotch whisky, sherry became an issue again, as many whiskies receive a finish in their casks.
