This traditional grape variety was first mentioned in South Tyrol as early as the 14th century and is now one of the region’s signature red varieties. The grapes for the 2023 vintage come from selected vineyards near Bolzano, Auer, and Margreid, which are located at an elevation of approximately 210 to 280 meters above sea level. There, deep alluvial soils with calcareous components characterize the growing conditions. After harvest, maceration takes place in stainless steel tanks. The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for about 12 months, partly in stainless steel and partly in concrete tanks. This deliberately restrained aging process highlights the Lagrein’s distinctive character.

With 12% alcohol by volume in the 0.75-liter bottle, the Alois Lageder Lagrein 2023 presents itself as a comparatively light and fresh expression of this South Tyrolean grape variety, which is often vinified in a powerful style. The long-established winery aims, in particular, to bring out the natural juiciness and acidity profile of the South Tyrolean Lagrein. The wine is dry and sealed with a natural cork.
