Tenuta San Guido is a prestigious winery in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. It is known for producing one of the most famous and prestigious wines in the world, Sassicaia. The estate and winery have a rich history and have played a significant role in the development of Italian wine. It was founded in the 1940s by Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who had the vision of producing a Bordeaux-style wine in Tuscany, focusing on the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety. He experimented with different winemaking techniques and grape blends until he found the perfect combination that expressed the unique terroir of the region. This pursuit led to the founding of Sassicaia. The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido cover around 2,500 hectares and are located near the Tyrrhenian Sea. The proximity to the sea, combined with the sandy and rocky soils of the area, creates an ideal microclimate for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon and other grape varieties.

The name "Sassicaia" is derived from the Italian word "sassi", which means "stones", and refers to the rocky soil of the vineyards. The wine is mainly made from Cabernet Sauvignon and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. The Sassicaia matures for 24 months in French barriques and a further 6 months in the bottle. With ageing potential until 2036, this wine embodies elegance, power and finesse and is a symbol of the excellent craftsmanship of Italian viticulture.

The Bolgheri Sassicaia gained its outstanding reputation through a blind tasting in London in 1978, in which it outperformed renowned Bordeaux wines, including Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. This surprise victory demonstrated the exceptional quality of Italian wines.
