In 1830 he built a distillery in the London district of Bloomsbury, producing high quality gin.
Tanqueray entered the export business in 1847 and supplied the British colonies, especially Jamaica. After his death in 1868, his son Charles Waugh Tanqueray inherited the company. Tanqueray Gin later became a popular brand in the United States, for example as the main ingredient in the drink Dry Martini. During German air raids in 1941 the distillery was almost completely destroyed - only one still remained intact and is still in use today. Today, most of the production takes place in Cameronbridge, Scotland. The name London Dry Gin does not indicate the origin, but refers to the recipe and the production process.
