The Ron Matusalem brand originated in Santiago de Cuba, where it was founded in 1872 by brothers Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, together with their partner Evaristo Alvarez. The name "Matusalem" comes from the biblical figure Methuselah, who is said to have lived to be 969 years old, and symbolizes the long maturation process and quality of the rum. Over the years, Ron Matusalem has faced various challenges, including changes in ownership and production locations due to political and economic factors. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the brand changed hands and production was moved to the Dominican Republic, where it continues to flourish.

The Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva Solera 23 is a creamy smooth rum from the Dominican Republic, made from an old Cuban recipe.

The oldest rums in this solera matured Ron Matusalem have a maturation period of 23 years behind them.

The rum is produced according to the solera process. This actually comes from the sherry production and was - because it offers a constant quality over many years and bottlings - also adopted for rum.

The best way to imagine the system is as several rows of barrels, one above the other. The oldest rums are stored in the lowest barrels, and the respective bottlings are made from these barrels.

In the process, however, only a part of the contents is removed, not the entire contents. The shortfall resulting from bottling is then replenished with the younger distillate from the row of barrels above.

These barrels are in turn completed with the rums maturing above them.

In the end, the maestro can thus guarantee an approximately consistent quality for each bottling.

The age specification on the label always refers to the oldest rum in the respective blend.
