The Benkovac winery was built in 1956-1957, following the models of existing wineries in the south of France.
Vinarija Benkovac became really famous only in 2005, when new vineyards in Korlat near Benkovac were planted on an area of 103 hectares with 530,000 vines.
The vineyard includes a range of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc i Mourvedre.
The grapes of the Merlot variety are grown on a controlled and limited area in the village of Korlat in Croatia and are then harvested by hand. In the winery, they are freed from the stems and gently crushed so that the juice comes into contact with the color and aroma of the grapes.
