Seven generations later, the whiskey is still filtered the same way Jack did back then.
The reason: The filtering gives it a distinctive mildness that has come to be expected from Jack Daniel's. Charcoal mellowing makes Jack Daniel's what it is: not a bourbon, but a Tennessee whiskey.
Through this process, the full flavor of the whiskey is refined, even before it is fully aged in barrels, of Jack Daniel's own making.
It's a painstaking process that requires special attention and makes the whiskey a bit more expensive to produce. However, any other process would not have met with Jack's approval.
Jack Daniel's GENTLEMAN JACK Tennessee Whiskey 40% Vol.
There is one important step that turns a bourbon into a Tennessee whiskey: charcoal mellowing.
In this process, the freshly distilled whiskey seeps drop by drop through a three-meter-thick layer of charcoal from the sugar maple.
As special as the filtering of the Gentleman Jack is also his maturation process in the barrel. Only our own barrels made of the best American white oak are used for this.
The insides of the barrels are carefully 'toasted' to caramelise the natural sugar of the wood.
After its barrel maturity this Tennessee Whiskey goes through the Charcoal Mellowing for the second time.
This not only gives Gentleman Jack its unmistakably gentle aroma, it also makes it one thing above all: unique worldwide.
