Domaene Wachau, based in Austria's most renowned wine-growing region, the Wachau, is one of the country's leading white wine producers.

The steep terraced vineyards, the cool marginal climate and the barren primary rock soils characterize the unique wines of the Wachau. Particularly complex, powerful and long-lasting wines are called "Smaragd" in the region. The steep local mountain of Domaene Wachau, the Kellerberg, rises directly behind the baroque Kellerschloessel in Duernstein. The vineyards grow on primary rock soil, mainly light-colored Gfoehler gneiss, which consists of 90% feldspar and quartz. This vineyard is considered a classic among Wachau wines, combining power and elegance with impressive substance and potential.

A mild and dry winter was followed by a wet April, which gave the soil sufficient moisture. This benefited the vines during the hot summer days. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worse in September, with repeated downpours, especially at harvest time. Fortunately, the sun returned in October, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly but perfectly. The result is elegant and precise wines that impress with a lot of energy and tension and combine vital acidity, clarity and substance on the palate.

The Gruener Veltliner grapes from the Kellerberg are carefully harvested by hand in several passes and after strict selection. After a maceration period and fermentation, partly spontaneous, in stainless steel tanks and large wooden barrels, the wine is matured for several months in both steel tanks and large wooden barrels.
