The secret recipe of the 'Elixir Vegetal', the 'Elixir of Long Life', dates back to 1605 and was deciphered from an old manuscript by the Carthusian monks.
Soon the elixir was also sold in a softened form as 'Chartreuse Verte' to the nearby villages as medicine.
The exact recipe was a well-kept secret until Napoleon Bonaparte around 1810, but he considered this recipe to be already known and unimportant.
It was not until 1838 that the monks developed another milder and sweeter version of the Chareuse Verte; the Chartreuse Jaune.
Even today, Chartreuse liqueurs are still produced by monks, which is also indicated by the 'ATC' label on the bottle.
