Unofficially, the Ardbeg distillery has been distilling since 1794 - in 1815, the distillery was bought by John McDougall and officially opened under the name Ardbeg.

"Ardbeg" comes from the Gaelic and translates as "small hill".

The distillery is located on the south coast of the Islay whisky region.

Weisshaus in Tirol has had access to rare rarities from the Ardbeg Distillery since 2017. Mr. Osler selected two special casks on site from Ardbeg's private stocks.

This rare Ardbeg, which matured for 14 years in a mixture of aromatic Madeira and classic bourbon casks, is inspired by the story of the lesser-known Islay unicorn.

One dark night, after a party at the distillery, hooves were heard clattering in the yard. Those who believe less in mythical tales say it was Rory, the distillery's greedy Shetland pony, known for his bad temper and devilish sweet tooth. Others, however, believe something else was at play. The distillery workers ventured outside to investigate. As they rounded the corner, they saw a horse-like creature rearing up in the full moon. A "horn" protruded from its head, creating an eerie silhouette. The next day, rumors circulated about the sighting of Scotland's national animal, a unicorn. Questions about an ambushed ice cream van, Rory's unlocked gate and a spooky horn went unanswered. But the workers know what they have seen. A greedy pony is plausible, but Islay remains mysterious.

Like the myth itself, this spirit may seem inherently sweet, but it hides a sinister and smoky side that should not be underestimated. The Unicorn's Tale is not chill-filtered and is bottled at 46% alcohol.
